Eagles Upset by Life with Second Half Scoring Drought
WALESKA, Ga. - Reinhardt Men's Lacrosse carried an early two-goal lead, but a four-goal swing in the second quarter changed the match Saturday night as visiting Life pulled away for a 9-6 victory over the Eagles. This was the final regular-season game for the Eagles as they now prepare for postseason play.
The decisive stretch came after Reinhardt built a 4-2 advantage in the first quarter. Luke Greer helped spark that start, scoring at 11:42 to put the Eagles ahead 2-1 and later adding another goal with 7:05 left in the quarter as Reinhardt extended the margin to 4-2. Life answered quickly in the second. Jared Cordova scored at 13:39 to trim the deficit to 4-3, Tristan Berry tied the game 5-5 at 9:06, and Evan Sengstock struck at 7:04 to give Life its first lead of the night at 6-5.
From there, Life controlled the scoreboard and many of the possession battles. The visitors won faceoffs 12-6 and finished with a 28-25 edge in shots, including a 15-13 advantage in shots on goal. Life also collected 24 ground balls to Reinhardt's 22, numbers that helped fuel the comeback after the Eagles' strong opening quarter. Reinhardt completed 16 clears, the same total as Life, but the Eagles were also whistled for six penalties totaling 180 seconds, compared with two penalties for 60 seconds by the visitors.
Sengstock delivered the biggest offensive line of the night for Life with four goals and two assists on 10 shots. He opened the third quarter with a goal at 14:24 to push the lead to 7-5, scored again late in the quarter at 1:28 for an 8-5 margin, then added his fourth goal at 13:28 of the fourth to make it 9-5. Alex McGuire added two goals for Life, including the opening score at 13:12 of the first quarter.
Greer was Reinhardt's top producer, finishing with three goals and one assist while taking eight shots. His third goal came at 8:42 of the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to 9-6, but the Eagles could not get closer. Reinhardt goalkeeper play kept the game competitive with six saves, while Life goalie Tucker Hodges turned aside seven shots in 54:59 and was credited with four goals allowed on 22 shots faced.
After scoring four times in the first quarter, Reinhardt was limited to one goal in the second, none in the third, and one more in the fourth as Life closed the game with a 7-2 run. The Eagles' early burst gave them a chance to control the night, but Life's second-quarter surge and faceoff edge proved to be the turning points in the 9-6 final.
The loss drops Reinhardt to third place in the AAC standings behind #1 Keiser and #2 SCAD. The conference will have the tournament matchups out soon, but the two top teams will have byes the first weekend of the tournament. Most likely, the Eagles will have to play at home on the weekend of April 24th or 25th. They will need to win this to move onto the semifinals, which will take place on May 1st at host school Life University.
