Late free-position goal lifts Reinhardt past Life, 10-9
MARIETTA, Ga. — Lainey Byrne buried her second free-position goal of the day with 1:04 remaining in the fourth quarter, lifting Reinhardt (Ga.) to a 10-9 road win over Life University in a back-and-forth matchup Saturday at Lupo Family Field.
The Eagles led 9-6 late in the third quarter after a three-goal surge, only to see Life rally with three straight in the fourth to tie it. Byrne, who finished with two goals on three shots, provided the decisive answer after Life's Tori Wolf made it 9-9 with 2:53 to play. Byrne's game-winner capped a perfect day on free-position attempts for the Eagles' attacker, who scored both of her goals on eight-meter opportunities.
Reinhardt outscored Life 2-2-4-1 by quarter, while the hosts posted a 2-2-2-3 line. The Eagles used a balanced attack, with Marissa Davis adding two goals, including a key man-down strike that tied the game 3-3 in the second quarter, and another tally that pushed the margin to 8-6 in the third. Hayley Rakestraw also netted two goals, one coming on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Izzy Prestia, as Reinhardt methodically built its advantage before halftime and into the third quarter.
After a 2-2 opening quarter, Life briefly grabbed a 3-2 edge early in the second on a free-position goal from Wolf. Reinhardt responded with three of the next four goals, including Rakestraw's man-up finish and an Emma Perritte strike at 1:24 to secure a 5-4 halftime lead. The Eagles then opened the third quarter with another push: Rakestraw scored at 13:38 off a feed from Carly Harris, and after Life twice pulled even through Hannah Leon, goals from Hanna Peace, Davis and Byrne in the final 5:37 of the frame stretched the margin to 9-6.
Life countered in the fourth behind standout attacker Roxie Beasley, who finished with three goals and two assists on 10 shots. Beasley scored twice in the quarter to cut the deficit to 9-8, then Leon set up Wolf for the tying goal with just under three minutes to play. Wolf totaled two goals and one assist, with both of her goals coming on free-position attempts, while Leon added two goals and an assist as Life tried to complete the comeback.
Reinhardt generated a 29–23 edge in shots and a 23–14 advantage in shots on goal, converting 10 of those attempts. The Eagles went 2-for-5 on free-position tries, both from Byrne, and committed just 13 turnovers compared with 21 for Life. Life held a narrow 19–18 advantage in ground balls and finished 12-for-20 on clears, while Reinhardt went 10-for-13. In goal, Life's keeper recorded 13 saves to keep the hosts within striking distance, while the Eagles' goalkeeper stopped five shots in the one-goal decision.
With the nonconference win, Reinhardt caps its road matchup at Life on a high note and will now turn its attention to the home slate. The Eagles are set to play their first home game on March 14th at 4 p.m. against Oglethorpe University, looking to build on the momentum of Saturday's late-game execution.
