Baseball team splits doubleheader with Mid-Continent on homecoming, travels to Shorter for two games on Wednesday
Mid-Continent scored twice in the top of the second inning of the first contest before Reinhardt went ahead for good with four runs in the bottom half and two in the third, taking a 6-2 lead. The Cougars got single runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to conclude the scoring.
The Eagles tallied 11 hits while MCU had five. Mid-Continent was guilty of four errors and Reinhardt one.
Freshman Tucker Adams went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the winners while Zach Kles finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Michael Lonati hit a two-run home run and walked while Don DiPetta was 1-for-2 with a pair of bases on balls and a run scored. Jay Huffman and freshman Josh Clark were each 1-for-3 with an RBI.
On the mound for the Eagles, freshman Jordan Villhauer started and earned the victory, going four innings with five strikeouts. Jeff Roberts threw one inning with a strikeout while Ben Gonglach got a save after striking out a pair in two innings and allowing no hits or runs.
In game two, the Cougars built a 5-0 advantage by scoring once in the top of the second inning, and two runs in each of the fifth and sixth. Reinhardt scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning but could get no closer.
MCU outhit the hosts 7-4. The Eagles committed four of the game's six errors, leading to three unearned runs for the guests.
Jay Huffman ended 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for Reinhardt while Billy King went 1-for-2 and scored. Freshman Andy Pringle added a hit and run scored.
Josh Wilson got the start and took the loss for the Eagles, giving up two earned runs with three strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Jake Waters recorded a strikeout before freshman Wil Hogan struck out two and allowed no hits or runs in the seventh inning.
Reinhardt is 1-2 overall while Mid-Continent is 3-1. The Eagles are on the road for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday against the Shorter University Hawks. Game one is set for 1 p.m. in Rome, Ga.
