Baseball team drops both games of doubleheader at Shorter, hosts Truett-McConnell this Friday
In the opener, Shorter scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning before the Eagles trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the sixth. In that sixth inning, Reinhardt left the tying and go-ahead runs on base.
The Hawks had a slim 4-3 edge in hits and made three of the game's seven errors. Shorter stranded eight base runners and the Eagles five. Each squad allowed just one earned run.
At the plate for Reinhardt, Cory Cox went 2-for-2 with a walk and run scored while Ethan Starr was 1-for-2 and scored.
Jake Waters was the starting and losing pitcher for the Eagles. He went four innings, surrendering four hits and one earned run with three strikeouts. Taylor Smith pitched the last two innings, giving up no hits or runs while recording two strikeouts.
The Hawks got out to a 4-0 lead in game two by scoring once in the bottom of the first inning and three times in the second. Reinhardt got on the scoreboard with a run in the fourth inning but the hosts answered with a run of their own in the fifth to conclude the scoring.
The Eagles left 11 runners on base and Shorter seven. Reinhardt allowed four unearned runs.
Jay Huffman finished 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Eagles while Brett Flick also collected two hits in four at-bats. Zach Kles doubled in three at-bats while Billy King chipped in with a hit. Freshman Andy Pringle drew a walk and drove in the club's only run.
In the pitching department for Reinhardt, freshman Wil Hogan started and took the loss after two innings of work in which he gave up one earned run with a pair of strikeouts. Ricky Johnson threw one scoreless inning before giving way to freshman Jeff Roberts, who lasted 2 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and no earned runs. Kendric McDonald struck out one and did not surrender a run in the final 2/3 inning.
The Eagles fall to 1-4 overall while the Hawks improve to 10-1. Reinhardt hosts the Truett-McConnell College Bears in a non-conference contest this Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Ken White Baseball Field.
