Baseball team sweeps doubleheader with Truett-McConnell, hosts twinbill against No. 9-ranked Southern Poly on Tuesday
In the opener, Reinhardt took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and added two runs in the fourth, recording its first shutout of the season.
Each team had five hits and there were no errors in the contest. The Eagles came up with the only extra-base hit. Reinhardt left seven runners on base and Truett-McConnell five.
Offensively for the Eagles, freshman Tucker Adams went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs while Don DiPetta finished 1-for-1 with two walks and a run scored. Ethan Starr was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored while Jay Huffman ended 1-for-2 with a walk.
Josh Wilson turned in a fine pitching performance in registering the win for Reinhardt. He gave up four hits with four strikeouts and one walk over six innings before giving way to freshman Wil Hogan, who earned a save after facing four batters in the seventh.
The Eagles scored five times in the first inning of game two before the Bears plated a pair of runs in the top of the third. Reinhardt tallied a run in the fourth inning and TMC one in the fifth, making the score 6-3. The guests tacked on another run in the seventh inning.
The Eagles had a slim 8-7 edge in hits and Truett-McConnell made two errors that led to three unearned runs. The Bears stranded eight base runners and Reinhardt five.
Brett Flick paced the Eagles at the plate by going 3-for-3 with two RBIs while Michael Lonati went 1-for-2 with a double, walk and two runs scored. Zach Kles was 1-for-2 with a double, walk and an RBI while Adams drove in a run with a 1-for-2 effort. Billy King and freshman Phillip Bates chipped in with a hit and run scored apiece.
On the mound for Reinhardt, freshman Jordan Villhauer started and threw five innings for the victory. He surrendered five hits and two earned runs while striking out two. Taylor Smith picked up a save with two innings of work.
The Eagles move to 3-5 overall while TMC drops to 10-5. On Tuesday, Reinhardt hosts a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. with the Southern Polytechnic State University Runnin' Hornets, who are ranked ninth nationally in the NAIA.
