Baseball team drops pair of AAC games to Montreat; same clubs play conference contest at Reinhardt on Sunday
There was no score through three innings of the first game, but Montreat tallied 13 runs over the final four. The Cavaliers scored once in the top of the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth, six in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Montreat outhit the Eagles 16-1 and made no errors to the hosts' three. The Cavaliers left 11 runners on base and Reinhardt one.
Michael Lonati accounted for the Eagles' only hit, a clean single to right field in the fourth inning.
On the mound for Reinhardt, Josh Wilson started and took the loss after pitching 5 2/3 innings. He allowed two earned runs with two strikeouts and one walk. Three relievers followed.
In the second contest, the guests came up with single runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings, building a 3-0 lead. The Eagles fought back with a run in the bottom of the fifth and another in the seventh, but left the tying run on base in that final inning.
Montreat finished with a 7-3 advantage in hits and there were no errors in the game. The Cavaliers stranded six base runners and Reinhardt two.
At the plate for the Eagles, Don DiPetta went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs while Wilson added a hit and run scored.
Ben Gonglach was Reinhardt's starting and losing pitcher after tossing four innings with a pair of strikeouts. Freshman CJ Oliva threw the final three innings, giving up just one hit and no runs with a strikeout and no walks.
The Eagles fall to 8-15 overall and 2-3 in the AAC while Montreat is 8-12 overall, including 3-2 in conference play. The same clubs play an AAC game at Reinhardt on Sunday at 2 p.m.
