BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – In what could've been the most complete game Reinhardt has put together on the diamond this year, the Eagles advanced to the winner's bracket of the 2018 NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round, 8-3, over Campbellsville (Ky.) in their first appearance in the event in program history.
The offense was humming – all eight RBIs came from batters 3-4-5 in the order – and Dylan Powers (11-3) navigated his way through 6.2 innings of work (4 Ks) to win his club-record 11th contest of the year on the mound.
The Tigers, however, did scratch across a tally in the opening frame after three 2-out hits brought home a run and the early 1-0 advantage. Reinhardt scored its first runs in NAIA postseason history in the top of the third on a Sherman Graves 2-RBI single and added another pair of scores in the fifth after Jacob Cagle singled up the middle to bring home two more teammates.
Campbellsville cut the 4-1 disadvantage to one run after an opposite-field 2-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Eagles bounced right back in the top of the sixth on yet another 2-RBI single, this time from Kaleb Swayze, who also notched his club's first NAIA National Championship base-hit in the opening inning through the hole at second base.
Swayze and Graves would both add insurance runs on individual RBIs in the eighth frame to hand the game over to the Reinhardt bullpen – Johnny Croley (1.1 innings) and Heriberto Casasola – who came in to pitch the ninth (3 Ks).
Daniel Rodriguez, Swayze, and Chandler Wold each collected three hits in the win.
On the bases, Rodriguez and Wold both touched home plate a trio of times.
The team lines up tomorrow morning against the top-seeded Drovers of Science & Arts (Okla.) as the Bowling Green Bracket at Bowling Green Ballpark continues for Reinhardt (39-17) at 10 a.m. CDT/11 a.m. EDT on Tuesday.
