Barquero Pitches Masterpiece in Win Against Bluefield
David Finney
Waleska, GA - The Eagles started another weekend conference series on Friday with a match-up with Bluefield College. The Rams were bringing a solid 20-3 record to Ken White Field, however, this is not anything that the Eagles have not faced this season. Reinhardt is used to playing top-level teams and they have proven that they can play with anyone.
Pablo Barquero would get the start on the mound for Coach Burton and he had an outstanding game. Barquero would strike out nine Bluefield batters and only allow 6 total hits as he would go the entire nine innings. The Rams were able to get on base from time to time, but they could never really threaten the Eagles and Barquero was keeping them held down. The Eagles played error-free baseball and this helped defensively keep the Rams off the board. Barquero kept his pitch count down by causing them to hit into easy pop-up outs and a few double plays. He would pick up his ninth win of the season from this game.
The bats got going for the Eagles in this game and they had a couple of multi-run innings. The Eagles were able to put up 3 runs in the third and then they would score 4 more in the bottom of the seventh. They picked up a single run in the bottom of the sixth on a Dawson Johns' deep shot over the tall left-field fence.
In the third inning, Jarrett Burney would single to center start the inning, and Jacob Profit followed by getting on base from an error. Next, Tucker Zdunich was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Shayne Campbell. Campbell would single to left which brought in Profit and Burney. Immediately following this, Patrick Baggett singled to left which brought in Tucker Zdunich. This put the Eagles up, 3-0 at the end of the third quarter.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles would put up another 4 runs pushing the score to 8-0. Baggett would single to center field. Nick Sanders followed with a single to left field. Dalton Turnbow would draw a walk and this brought up Alex Coulter. Coulter would single to left field which would score Baggett. Next, Burney singled to left and this scored Nick Sanders. At the end of the inning, Zdunich hit a sacrifice fly which brought in Alex Coulter.
Patrick Baggett would go 4 for 5 with a double to lead the Eagles in hitting. Dawson Johns would go 2 for 2 with his solo shot over the left-field walll.
The Eagles will return on Saturday afternoon to finish out the series with a doubleheader. The first game starts at 1 pm and the second game will be around 4 pm. The forecast is scheduled for high winds and cooler temps through the weekend, but it will be dry and decent weather for baseball. Come out and support your Reinhardt Eagles!
