Reinhardt Splits Doubleheader at CIU Behind Pangborn/Gaskins shutout, Late Game 2 Rally Falls Short
Columbia, SC - Reinhardt Baseball opened Saturday's doubleheader with an emphatic 8-0 shutout of CIU, then dropped the nightcap 5-4 after Columbia International (CIU) built an early lead and held off the Eagles' comeback attempt at Miller Field.
The decisive blow in Game 1 came at the end, but Reinhardt controlled the opener most of the afternoon. Cade Chamlee led the offense with two hits and five RBIs, driving in the game's first run in the fourth inning and capping the scoring with a three-run double down the left-field line in the ninth. Jackson Rains went 2-for-4 with a double and scored twice, and Ryan Stephens added a solo home run to left in the eighth as the Eagles finished with eight runs on 11 hits.
Reinhardt broke through for a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Rains doubled to left and later scored on Chamlee's single to right. The Eagles added two more runs in the sixth, with Cannon Dorsey driving in a run on a single and Chamlee adding a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 edge. A run in the seventh stretched the lead to 4-0 before Stephens' homer made it 5-0 in the eighth. Chamlee's bases-clearing double in the ninth put the opener away.
On the mound, Ty Pangborn set the tone with seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits, walking two, and striking out five. Riley Gaskins finished the shutout, not allowing a hit or run in his two innings as Reinhardt posted a clean defensive game with no errors.

Game 2 turned quickly and stayed tight. CIU scored twice in the first inning when Kai Smith singled and Corbin Wright lined a two-run double down the left-field line. Reinhardt answered in the second with its best offensive stretch of the game. Charles Smith doubled, Ethan Moore followed with an RBI double, and Juan Pablo Morales drove a two-run homer to right-center, pushing the Eagles in front 4-2.
That lead lasted only a half-inning. CIU responded with three runs in the bottom of the second as Jennings Greene singled home a run, Kai Smith tripled in another, and Wright delivered again with his second RBI double of the game for a 5-4 advantage. Wright finished with two hits, three RBIs and two doubles for CIU. From there, Collin Otte changed the game in relief, working 5 2/3 innings and allowing just two hits and one run while striking out seven to earn the win.
Morales finished with two hits and two RBIs in the nightcap, accounting for half of Reinhardt's runs, but the Eagles managed only one hit after the second inning and could not erase the one-run deficit. The split left Reinhardt with a dominant pitching-and-defense performance in the opener and a missed chance in the second game after briefly seizing momentum with the four-run surge in the second inning.
The Eagles have a busy home week coming up as they continue to keep pace in the AAC standings. They have a home game Tuesday with Cumberland University and then they have a weekend AAC series with Pikeville as they try to climb in the standings before the AAC Tournament.
