Eagles Can't Capitalize on Strong Start
By Erinn Marroquin and Angel Cornista
WALESKA, GA.- The men of Reinhardt had a tough battle for the home opener of the 2021-22 basketball season. A matchup with the Phoenix of Cumberland University (TN.) showed strong potential and a lot of room for growth for the Eagles.
Reinhardt had a slow start as Cumberland took a lead of 16-7 early in the first half. With 8:33 left in the first, the Eagles looked to tie the score 18-18. This fighting spirit carried RU for the remainder of the half, finishing 38-25 leading into halftime.
The Eagles brought this momentum into the majority of the second half, but unforced errors and poor decisions created the opportunity for the visiting team to switch the energy to its benefit. With the Phoenix outscoring the Eagles 57-20 in the second half, it was impossible for RU to lock back in. This made the final score 58-82 to complete Reinhardt's Home Opener in the Brown Athletic Center.
Cumberland vs. Reinhardt
- Kristian Collins led the offense with 12 points and went 5-for-5 at the free throw line.
- Jalin Wimberly was the only other player in double digits with 10 points as well as 3 steals.
- Dereck Lampkin led the team with 9 rebounds.
The Eagles are back in the Brown Athletic Center this Saturday, November 6th at 1:00 pm as they take on the Knights of Kentucky Christian (KY.) for their first AAC game of the season.
