Eagles Get Five in Double Figures in Win Over St. Andrews
Waleska, GA - The start of the season has been a little rocky for the Eagles, but there are definite signs of how great this team can be. Tonight was one of those steps that is going to help this team gel together. There was electricity in the gym at the Brown Athletic Center on Thursday evening - which has seemed to be missing this season. The Eagles showed a little of what they can do when they focus and play together with a much-needed win against St. Andrews, 94-74.
For the first time this season, the Eagles started off the game in attack mode and were pressing the guards of St. Andrews end to end. They created turnovers and fastbreak baskets which have been absent at times this season. In addition, the team was hitting their shots in order to get them the early lead. Once they had it, they never let go.
Freshman guard, Mekhi Mawdesley, started the game on fire and the Eagles fed him the ball. He had 11 total points in the game which is his career-high so far and they all came in the first half when the Eagles needed to jump out quickly on the Knights.
The Eagles had balanced scoring tonight with five players in double-figures. Along with Mawdesley's 11 points, Jamison Syphore led the Eagles in scoring with 15 points and he had a tremendous night shooting behind the three-point line. Center Antonio Spencer added 13 total points to go along with 5 rebounds. His presence in the middle was felt as he created issues for the Knight's offense. Nate Louis added 12 points for the Eagles and was a big factor - especially in the first half. Tafari Thomas matched Mawdesley with 11 points and he had 5 rebounds as well.
Greg Hobbs and Javin Wimberly were dishing out the assists in the game setting up their teammates with good looks at the basket. Hobbs led the team in assists with 8 and Wimberly was just behind with 7 assists. Wimberly had a well-rounded game scoring 6 points and pulling down 3 rebounds.
Tucker Lowe and Fred Adams both had 6 points each in the game with all of them coming from behind the three-point arch. Adams went 2 for 2 on his three-point shots. Freshman Brasen James had the highlight of the night showing off his athleticism with a steal and fastbreak down the court for a windmill dunk. This brought the fans at the Brown to their feet and put a cap on the game for the Eagles.
This was a much-needed win for the Eagles and should give them a boost of confidence going forward. The Eagles will travel to Johnson (TN) this Saturday to take on the Royals for another AAC game, then they will be on the road at Point University next Tuesday evening before going on the short Thanksgiving break.
