ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After helping mold one of the best defenses in the NAIA, Reinhardt head coach Joey Johnson and goalkeeper Torge Wiedenroth were tabbed the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Coach of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year for 2018.
Johnson has now been named to the accolade of the AAC's best on the sideline for the second-consecutive season, while this is the first such honor for one of the best goalies nationwide.
Wiedenroth, who was named AAC Defensive Player of the Week after stopping four shots against Montreat (N.C.) in the opening round of the AAC Championship for yet another shutout in a 2-0 win, also finds his name on the AAC First Team list.
He was joined by Todd Fidler, Jack Hardacre and Victor Profit as first teamers within the conference. Reinhardt is currently in the top ten in the country in goals allowed per game at .65 each time out, and Wiedenroth has made 76 stops while allowing only 11 netted shots all year.
Hardacre and Profit have been assigned each contest to help shut down opposing offenses, while Fidler has patrolled the middle of the field and gathered nine goals and six assists heading into Tuesday.
Not to be outdone, three additional Eagles earned Second Team All-Conference for their efforts on the pitch: Leonardo Fagioli, Taylor Gray (5 goals; 3 assists) and Aaron Whitten (team-best 11 goals; 9 assists).
Nathan Ashburn was Reinhardt's representative on the Champions of Character Team, and a slew of Reinhardt student-athletes made their way on to the AAC All-Academic squad.
