Goals Aplenty for Eagles at Kentucky Christian
By Mike DeVader, Reinhardt Director of Athletic Communications & Media
GRAYSON, Ky. – The Eagles stepped foot on the field for the first time in the month of October and didn't disappoint, pouring it on the Knights all afternoon on their home field on Saturday, 9-0, in a dominating performance over Kentucky Christian to improve to 2-0 after back-to-back Appalachian Athletic Conference blankings.
"This season has been characterized by unprecedented adversity and so I am pleased with the manner in which our players have persevered and maintained a positive outlook," head coach Joey Johnson said. "Today was a gift to be on the field as a team competing together again. With this only our second match together this year as a team – we are in the early stages of development as a group – but there are some positives to build on. I appreciate the opportunity to share in this season's journey with them.
"Coach Miller and his team are a class act and I respect so many characteristics they represented today as a club. I rarely mention an opposing player, but as I told Coach Miller postgame, I thought central defender Isaiah Jones was an outstanding example of leadership today on the field for the Knights."
After both squads felt the other one out in the opening minutes, Pavel Dashin hit a header off a corner kick from Philip Frowis to earn a 1-0 advantage at 30:29. Aaron Whitten would double the lead at 27:56 off a nice touch from Gian-Luca Fahling.
Reinhardt would watch as its cushion would grow by one compliments of Gus Fidler, who was assisted by Leonardo Fagioli and Costa Lopez on combination play in the 18-yard box. Now ahead, 3-0, Whitten got another score before the Eagles added another pair of goals before halftime – Rafael Pais; 9:22 and Whitten; 1:55.
Like Whitten, Fidler would find the back of the net multiple times from another dime from Frowis. Not to be outdone, the duo of Dashin and Pais put their names in the scorebook for another tally as well (27:11 and 23:18).
The hometown squad comes back to Ken White Field at University Stadium for the first time in nearly a month when it welcomes the Lions of Bryan (Tenn.) to Waleska for a 7:30 p.m. kick on Oct. 21.
