Reinhardt Drops Semifinal Matchup With Brenau (Ga.)
By Mike DeVader, Reinhardt Director of Athletic Communications & Media
KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Golden Tigers of Brenau (Ga.) continued their hot streak on Thursday evening after they took out the Eagles, 6-3, in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Semifinals to advance to Friday's tournament championship.
Reinhardt (39-12) suffers its first loss of the postseason, but with the AAC Championship being double elimination, the hometown team is still alive and will play again tomorrow.
"The summary of today is Brenau made a lot of good plays and we made very few," lead Eagle Jade Geuther said. "All teams want to be playing on the championship day and we are doing that tomorrow. It will be a long one if we get to what we want but it also has the potential to be a lot of fun."
The scoring occurred early and often in the semifinal bout as the eight seed got on the board in the first after a couple of miscues in the field. The No. 3 seed, however, responded with two in the bottom of the inning compliments of a bases-loaded walk by Megan Huss and an RBI-single up the middle from Kyrstyn Fisher.
The Golden Tigers didn't blink at their 2-1 deficit, either, as they netted four more runs on a single and a 3-run blast to move back ahead, 5-2, after the top of the second stanza.
Jill Martinet got her club back within two at 5-3 in the bottom of the second, but Brenau would get that tally back in the fifth on another Reinhardt miscue as the scoreboard went quiet the rest of the way.
Martinet went 3-for-4 and two others picked up a pair of hits each (Fisher and Emma Adams).
A rematch with the Bears of Truett McConnell (Ga.) is on tap tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. in an elimination contest.
The winner advances to the AAC Championship Final.
