Lady Eagles Swoop to 14-1
December 30, 2016
A 13-point performance from Jaleya Mosley helped (RV) Reinhardt hold on to defeat St. Thomas, 54-52, in the final game of the Miami-Doral Hotels Classic and the NAIA Southeastern Challenge in Miami Gardens, Fla.
The win improves the Lady Eagles to 14-1 on the season and gives RU the fifth-best winning percentage in NAIA Division II women's basketball (.933). Only undefeated teams St. Francis (Ill.), St. Xavier (Ill.), and Southeastern and 15-1 Concordia (Neb.) have better current marks. The Lady Eagles have also won seven games in a row for the second time this season.
The tournament hosts actually had more made shots from the field in the game as STU went 21-of-60, compared to RU's 17-of-51 mark on field goal attempts. However, the game would be decided on the glass as RU pulled in 20 offensive rebounds to score 22 second chance points. STU had 10 offensive rebounds and managed just eight points on the extended possessions.
While RU led 29-21 at the half, STU (4-8) rallied back to take a 47-46 lead in the fourth quarter. Bria White's put-back gave RU the advantage on the next possession, and a put-back by Rebecca Cheeks off a Jada Hubbard miss made it 50-47 for the Lady Eagles with just under five minutes left. STU had opportunities to tie or take the lead, but Reinhardt's defense kept the home side from scoring. With the lead down to just one in the final minute, STU looked for the lead, but a missed shot in the paint landed in the hands of Cheeks, and RU called timeout. After a foul on the inbound play, White made one free-throw, giving the Bobcats a glimmer of hope. On the final possession, the ball was knocked around in the lane and STU had to ask for timeout with 0.2 left. The attempt at a tip-in on the final play saw the ball land just outside the paint away from the basket as the Lady Eagles held on for the win.
JessAnn Nix scored 10 points for Reinhardt, with Hubbard and white adding seven. White pulled in a game-high 10 rebounds as the Lady Eagles out-rebounded STU 47-27 for the game.
Reinhardt will be back in action Tuesday as the Lady Eagles ring in the new year against Columbia in Appalachian Athletic Conference action. Tip-off at the Brown Athletic Center in Waleska, Ga., is set for 5:30 p.m.
