Eagles Close Season Opener with a Loss
By Erinn Marroquin and Angel Cornista
Rollins Center (KY.) - Reinhardt opened their season with a tough loss to the University of the Cumberlands Patriots. The Eagles came out strong in the first quarter with a lead of 7-2 forcing the Patriots into their first three turnovers. This forced the Patriots to look toward their bench to answer to RU's defense. However, the Eagles failed to match their opponent's energy, off the bench, with Reinhardt scoring 28 bench points to Cumberlands' 43.
The Eagle bench struggles never allowed them to gain their footing in the first half, making them play catch up the rest of the game. Cumberlands outshot Reinhardt 25-18 in the first quarter and 28-23 in the second, making the score 41-53 going into halftime.
Head Coach Toby Wagoner brought the team together moving into the second half as the Eagles played tight to the Patriots scoring 22-23 in the 3rd quarter and 27-23 in the fourth.
Their efforts fell just short with a score of 90-99 as the last whistle blew.
