MARIETTA, Ga. – Reinhardt volleyball completed a two-match sweep in straight sets in the opening outings of the Life (Ga.) Tournament in Marietta against Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) – 25-11, 25-21, 25-16 – and Faulkner (Ala.) – 25-16, 25-23, 25-22.
The Eagles are now 6-4 on the season as they continue to navigate one of the toughest schedules to begin the year in all the NAIA.
"Today was a good day for us as we are still trying to get a new team, a deep team, to come 'together' as a team on the court," head coach Brian Goodhind said. "In match one, for example, statistically we dominated; we hit a very high percentage on all six of our rotations, and just under .300 as a team to win in three. With that said, it still felt like something was missing and there was a tense energy. Match two I knew Faulkner would force the girls to come together or they would go down. Faulkner is a team that I very much have a ton of respect for. They are hands down one of the scrappiest teams you will ever see; they never quit. They play together and play to honor God. That last match today truly helped our girls take another step in the right direction.
"Angel Cornista had a career-high in digs with 26 and Tessa Colden posted a double-double with 11 kills/ 10 digs; but, the last match was definitely a team effort with a lot of great plays from everyone. It was great having so many fans there for the last match… Thank you to the families and RU student-athletes that came out in bunches to cheer us on."
Reinhardt was able to have its way with both the Lions and the Eagles, respectively, but the Lions didn't go down without a fight – especially in set two. The hometown Eagles hit .483 to fly out to a 1-0 advantage, but hit a bit of a speedbump in the second stanza when trying to put Freed-Hardeman away.
The Lions were able to creep back into the contest after trailing, 22-14, and get within four points after putting together a string of five-consecutive scores. The scoreboard got as close as 24-21, but an attack error gave the set to Reinhardt.
The Eagles would then cruise in the third period to take the match, 3-0.
Savanna Davis ended up with nine kills in the win, and Erinn Marroquin had four service aces to go along with 16 assists, tying for the team-high in dimes with Carlee Baxter.
Defensively, Angel Cornista (12), Tessa Colden (11) and Marroquin (10) were on the top line in digs.
Poor offense from Faulkner enabled Reinhardt to carry its winning momentum into the second battle on Friday, as the opposing Eagles combined for a hitting percentage of .073. In total, Goodhind's bunch combined for 39 kills, and were again paced by Davis (10) in the three-set positive outcome.
Cornista was all over the court on the receiving end with a squad-best 26 defensive receptions, which helped the offense get into scoring position throughout the entire contest. Contesting shots at the net was also a high point in the win over the Eagles, as the block numbers were impressive: Shadaisha Summerall (5) and Davis (3).
Baxter and Marroquin were again the focal point of the assists, as the duo combined for 27 overall.
The club looks to take at least 3-out-of-4 tomorrow on day two as Reinhardt gets up early and lines up against Michigan-Dearborn at 9 a.m.
