MARIETTA, Ga. – The Eagles made it through both portions of the Life (Ga.) Tournament unscathed, as Reinhardt completed a 4-0 slate of matches that concluded Saturday evening with triumphs over Michigan-Dearborn (3-1, 25-12, 25-27, 25-20, 25-23) and Southeastern (Fla.) (3-2, 23-25, 25-13, 25-20, 15-25, 15-9).
Reinhardt has been playing away from Waleska since Aug. 17, but has overcome a daunting schedule and adversity to bring home an 8-4 mark so far on the season.
"It has been a long three weeks for our team coming off the preseason," lead Eagle Brian Goodhind said. "We put them in three-straight away tournaments; 12 matches in the books before we play in our first conference match. It's been a great experience for the team and made sure to get them a good mix of competition that would have them as prepared as possible for this long grind of a season. Today was a great level of competition – both Michigan and Southeastern played really well and allowed our girls to really have to grind together to pull off today's wins.
"It's been great seeing some younger players step up and rise, while also seeing some veteran players really step into their roles and help lead us. I'm really proud of the team and look forward to playing at home this upcoming week. We are really looking forwarded to seeing the support we get at home from our RU community to give us that home court feel."
What to Know:
Match 1 against Michigan-Dearborn – Tessa Colden: 15 kills, 9 digs; Angel Cornista: 18 digs; freshman Holly Heath 18 digs (career-best) and a foursome of aces.
The Wolverines watched as the Eagles steamrolled to a 1-0 advantage after one set, but Michigan-Dearborn regrouped to tie the score in the very next stanza. Reinhardt would have to claw its way to every point the rest of the way and hold on the final two periods to avoid a deciding-set.
Match 2 against Southeastern – Freshman Savanna Davis had a new career high in kills with 23 and .391; Junior captain Colden added in 17 digs, 13 kills and 5 aces.
The nail-biting competition continued in the event's final outing against the Fire, as the Eagles came-from-behind to win the non-conference battle, 3-2. Southeastern put Reinhardt in a bit of a hole early – taking set one – before the next two stanzas went the way of the Eagles. The Fire dominated the fourth set to force a fifth-and-final period, but ran out of gas in the final few plays.
Columbia International (S.C.), who just joined the Appalachian Athletic Conference in volleyball, pays as visit to the Brown Athletic Center on Sept. 6 for the home opener for the Eagles.
First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
