WALESKA, Ga. – Excitement was alive and well inside the home arena for Reinhardt volleyball on Thursday night, as the Eagles opened Appalachian Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 sweep of league newcomer Columbia International (S.C.), 25-15, 25-4, 25-17.
The Eagles (9-4) are on a five-match winning streak and begin conference play on the right foot heading into the meat of the schedule.
"It was great to be at home tonight after 12 matches in-a-row away, and I thought the team played well and I was able to get a look at a few different lineups," head coach Brian Goodhind said. "It's great to see some of our freshman playing really well and growing so much as players already. Our fans were great tonight and I hope we can continue to see our gym get packed and loud.
"One of my favorite moments was when a tight ball went on the net and my setter, Carlee Baxter, thought she was 6-feet-tall… and went up hard to hit it straight down. It was the most celebrated net violation I've ever seen."
Who Did What
Kills: Savanna Davis (10), Emily Charbonneau (7), Tessa Colden (5)
Aces: Carlee Baxter (2), Kelley Adkins (2), Emily Charbonneau (1)
Blocks: Brianna Baez (2), Savanna Davis (2), Ashley Hudson (1)
Assists: Carlee Baxter (23), Erinn Marroquin (12), Emily Charbonneau (1)
Digs: Angel Cornista (13), Sophia Graziano (5), Emily Charbonneau (3)
Coach Goodhind was able to get a lot of his bench into the contest for much-needed live action, as the depth of his roster showed up in a big way with a cumulative hitting percentage of .453. Davis had a team-high 10 kills on 12 attempts, and Charbonneau was next in line with seven scores in eight tries (.875).
Baxter orchestrated the offensive attack against the Rams with 23 assists, and defensively, Cornista netted 13 digs before giving way to some younger players to finish the triumph.
As a team, the Eagles combined for four blocks.
A tri-match at the Brown Athletic Center is on tap for Saturday as Reinhardt will take on both Brenau (Ga.) and Faulkner (Ala.). Each squad will lineup against the hometown team at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
