Reinhardt Overshadows Union (Ky.) in Big Friday Night Win

WALESKA, Ga. – For the first time since Oct. 16, 2010, the Reinhardt Eagles stepped off the volleyball court victorious over Union (Ky.) following a 3-0 sweep of the Bulldogs (25-11, 28-26, 25-13) in front of a ruckus crowd inside the Brown Athletic Center Friday night.
Reinhardt (13-4, 4-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) has now claimed nine-consecutive victories after wrapping up its first homestand a perfect 5-0.
"First off, I'm extremely proud of this program," head coach Brian Goodhind said. "Our goal was to turn the program around here at Reinhardt; you tell me your thoughts after watching this team and the environment in our gym tonight. I'm so proud to be an Eagle right now… Our RU family came through huge tonight – the crowd was so hyped and amazing – that's how a home match should feel.
"Our team played extremely well two out of three sets and showed again they never give up in set two. Ashley Hudson had her best match as an Eagle hitting .500 with 11 kills on 16 swings, and Shadaisha Summerall was a force at the net with four total blocks and hitting .375."
The environment in the volleyball gym was like nothing the facility had felt in several years, and Reinhardt took it all in and ran away with the first game in outstanding fashion. The aforementioned second stanza was the highlight of the match for both teams – and a momentum killer for Union – who failed to put away the Eagles on numerous occasions.
Both squads exchanged blows throughout the entire second set, but Reinhardt found itself in a tough situation, down, 24-22, with the Bulldogs serving for the match after scratching across two-straight points.
Union, however, gave life right back to the Eagles following a service error. Reinhardt immediately responded with another score to tie, but the Bulldogs got right back on their feet and served for the match again.
A kill from the hand of Tessa Colden – followed by a block on the defensive end – put Union on the brink of elimination, but the visitors fought back just like their hosts had done previously. The set would come to a close following an Ashley Hudson kill and an ace from Carlee Baxter.
The crucial loss in the second game proved to be too much for the Bulldogs, as they started the third stanza strong but couldn't hold on after the Eagles stretched their lead from 13-11 to 21-12 to take complete command.
Union would only score one more point before Reinhardt finished off the evening and broke the stranglehold the Bulldogs had on the program for a number of years.
