MONTREAT, N.C. – Reinhardt volleyball was able to pass its first road test within the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) on Friday night, as the Eagles pulled away from Montreat (N.C.) in straight sets, 25-23, 25-16, 25-17.
Coach Brian Goodhind and company have hit 10-games over .500 in record at 14-4 after beginning the AAC league slate at a perfect 5-0 following the triumph against the Cavaliers in North Carolina.
"I thought the kids played well tonight and handled taking Montreat's best punch in set one to win another close set," Goodhind said. "These girls continue to play very well when their backs are against the wall. Their response in sets two and three made me very proud.
"Our middles played better today and our block helped our defense be solid tonight… nine blocks and 40 digs by our defense. Onto Milligan tomorrow."
Tonight's theme against Montreat started with the defense, as Reinhardt combined for nine blocks at the net and was led by a half-dozen rejections (5 assisted) from Sarah Chapman. That defensive intensity allowed the Eagles to seize control after set one (25-23 win) and pull away from the Cavaliers by nine and eight points, respectively, the rest of the way.
Scoring for the home team seemed to come easy through the beginning of the match after Montreat pulled out to an 11-3 advantage. Reinhardt would claw its way back into contention with small spurts of offense to get within attacking distance and put pressure on the Cavaliers.
The Eagles would complete the opening-stanza comeback with three-straight scores to tie the set and then get back-to-back points to win after an error by Montreat.
Reinhardt would come out with more fire in all areas in sets two and three to strongarm its way to a clean sweep in its first conference road test of 2018. Each of the last two games saw the Eagles go on large runs throughout the set and then finish them off with multiple scores in-a-row.
