Reinhardt Comes-From-Behind to Take Down Point, 3-1

WEST POINT, Ga. – The Eagles took the best punch Point (Ga.) had to offer in the opening set of Tuesday night's Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) battle and stayed standing strong, as Reinhardt regrouped to claim three-straight stanzas and a big conference triumph on the road, 3-1 (15-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-18).
With the win, the Eagles reach the 20-victory plateau at 20-4 (11-0 AAC) to stay at the top of the league standings following its 16th-consecutive positive outcome.
"Tonight was a great match versus a very good Point team… I have a lot of respect for Point," head coach Brian Goodhind said. "They are a team that I saw last season was going to be a team to watch this season; great talent with very good coaching. We took a huge shot by them in set one, and we were up, 13-10, and missed a routine easy tip by two defenders going after the same ball. Point jumped on the mistake and never looked back, scoring 15 to only two more by us. Our ball control on serve receive wasn't smooth tonight and I was impressed to see our kids step up other parts of our game to help get us a huge 'W'.
"Offense in sets two through four was solid but our defense continues to be huge for us; 80 digs as a team tonight, with our libero (Angel Cornista) having a career night with 32 digs. We will get back in the gym and work on some things and get our focus on to Friday."
The aforementioned 13-10 lead vanished quickly after the Skyhawks came out determined to upset the conference's top team. Twelve errors by Reinhardt aided the home squad's cause – as did a hitting percentage of zero – heading into set two.
A refocused Eagle group found their legs in set two as things started coming together for the visitors on both ends of the net. Relentless effort on defense and strong offensive possessions pushed the squad to a 17-11 lead midway through the game. The closest Point would get the rest of the set was within four as Reinhardt knotted up the conference clash.
The Skyhawks made sure to come out strong once again in set three as the Eagles had to put together five points out of six to regain the lead at 12-10. Point would immediately tie the score but watched it evaporate following another four scores in-a-row by Goodhind and company. From there, each club would exchange punches – beginning with the Skyhawks – before the Eagles eventually earned another set off a kill from Emily Charbonneau.
An early 7-4 lead in what proved-to-be the final set of the match was just enough cushion for Reinhardt to stay out of striking distance the rest of the way. The Eagles continued to keep Point at arms-length and eventually pulled away after scoring six out of seven points to build a 19-12 advantage.
The Skyhawks, as expected, had one more last gasp left in them – tallying five points in six opportunities – before Reinhardt sealed the deal with five of six of their own to win, 25-18.
Highlighting the effort tonight was a pair of career-best outings from Carlee Baxter, who collected 51 assists in the win and Angel Cornista, who was all over the court defensively with 32 digs.
