WALESKA, Ga. – The Eagles capped off a perfect regular season at home with their 10th win of the year inside the Brown Athletic Center on Tuesday, and in the process, took care of business on Senior Night against Point (Ga.) in straight sets to notch the team's 21st-consecutive triumph (25-17, 25-14, 28-26).
Reinhardt continues to keep pace with its journey to back-to-back Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) championships after moving to 16-0 in the AAC and 25-4 overall.
"Tonight was a special night with it being Senior Night," head coach Brian Goodhind said. "We have three great young women that we honored tonight in Angel, Kirby and Shelby. It was great to see their families, boyfriends, teammates and the RU community there to celebrate them this evening. As far as the match itself, it was a solid match. We played a very good opponent in Point and had a very well-balanced offense tonight, hitting .290 as a team.
"I've been impressed with the balance of our team all season to this point. This team doesn't seem to care who shines, as long as the TEAM shines. We took a big step tonight in one of our goals this season of winning back-to-back conference championships."
The home team got off to a much better start in this outing compared to the last time these two schools faced off on the Skyhawks' floor, as the Eagles found themselves tied at 13 in the first set. From there, Reinhardt put together a scoring spree of three in-a-row and eight of nine tallies to move ahead, 21-14.
Point would earn a couple more points before the Eagles netted three of the next four points to claim the opening stanza.
A hitting percentage of .351 in the next game propelled Reinhardt to a 2-0 lead in the match after the hosts again used a big scoring run to pull away in the middle of the set. The Eagles' 16-10 lead was upped to 19-12 before three-straight scores from Reinhardt moved the advantage to double-digits at 22-12.
The Skyhawks would try to gain momentum with back-to-back points, but the Eagles finished off the set with three-consecutive winning plays.
Point wasn't about to give in just yet, as the visitors fought back from a 15-10 deficit to challenge Reinhardt to the very end. Both clubs went back-and-forth until the Skyhawks tied the scoreboard at 21-21 following a pair of points.
The Eagles were right on the doorstep of victory at 24-22 until Point came back with two kills to notch things up at 24 – and again at 25 – before pulling ahead, 26-25. Emily Charbonneau then stepped up in the clutch with a pair of kills, including the match-sealer, sandwiched around a score from Isabelle Diaz to push Reinhardt to the win.
