LEBANON, Tenn. – Reinhardt dropped its first volleyball match in over two months after losing in three hard-fought sets to Huston-Tillotson (Texas) in the opening outing of the Phoenix Classic, hosted by Cumberland (Tenn.), before immediately rebounding against Piedmont International (N.C.), 3-0.
The Rams and Eagles slugged it out to the tune of 28-30, 24-26, 22-25 before Reinhardt downed the Bruins, 25-16, 25-23, 25-15 to improve to 26-5 in 2018.
"This trip is one we are using to evaluate where we are as a team before we make our push into postseason," head coach Brian Goodhind said. "Our first match today definitely exposed some areas we need to tighten up, and we lost a tight, three-setter to Huston. It was tough watching us up, 24-18, and not able to close set one; up in set two, couldn't close again and lost the lead again late in set three. A positive was offensively our middles played well today. We still need to tweak our blocking but offensively they did well.
"Our second match, we were very good offensively but still need to tighten up our defensive system. Cheetara, Dasia and Savannah played outstanding and carried the offensive load to help us win match two against Piedmont International University. Tomorrow will give us an opportunity to tweak a few things and continue our goals for this tournament."
In match one, both squads went back-and-forth throughout set one, but it was the Eagles who got on the doorstep of a 1-0 lead thanks to a 5-0 run to push the score to 24-18. Huston-Tillotson wouldn't go away, however, as it came from behind to tally seven-consecutive points to lead, 25-24. Reinhardt would then come back from four set-point situations before the Rams ended the marathon with back-to-back scores for a 30-28 score.
It would be déjà vu all over again for the Eagles in set two as well, as they held multiple advantages through the second stanza – and in position to win – before the opposition claimed five points in six chances to move ahead, 2-0, following a block and an ace to win.
Huston-Tillotson would use the momentum to its aid in the third set and put together its best effort of the match and pull ahead, 23-18. Reinhardt would try its best to stay alive, but would come up short by three points.

Bookend sets of .333 and .433 hitting percentages in the second match of the day helped the Eagles soar back into the win column in straight sets and move to 1-1 in the event. Reinhardt was back in its comfort zone with an early lead (8-2; 10-3) before going on cruise control the rest of the way. Piedmont International tried to make things interesting towards the back-end of the opening game, but was in too deep of a whole to make any real damage.
The Bruins flexed their muscles most of the second set with a 16-14 lead, but watched as the Eagles scored five-straight points for a three-point cushion. Piedmont International tallied back-to-back scores to get within 24-23, before a service error gave the set to Reinhardt.
A two-point lead – 17-15 – transitioned into victory after Goodhind's club ended the competition on an eight-point run with a combination of kills, aces and attack errors from the Bruins.
