COLUMBIA, S.C. – Reinhardt volleyball is back on a winning streak after claiming its third triumph in-a-row on Friday night after the Eagles pulled away from the Rams of Columbia International (S.C.) in straight sets, 27-25, 25-11, 25-14.
"The team came out slow and gave CIU a great opportunity to take set one, but somehow they managed to pull it out," head coach Brian Goodhind said. "After the slow start, the team stepped up, regained focus and played well in sets two and three to close out the match. Emily played really well off the bench and gave us a huge spark hitting over .800. Our girls need to learn you can't always just 'turn it on' whenever you want. That's not a champion mindset.
I would like to shout out to Angel Cornista who couldn't make the trip… We miss you!! On to
SAU."
With its senior captain sitting at home, Reinhardt struggled out of the gate after the hosts came out strong and stayed step-for-step with the Eagles. The visitors combined to hit just .184 in the opening stanza, setting the table for a wire-to-wire first set.
The Rams stepped up in crunch time and scored four-straight points to take a 25-24 lead after avoiding defeat, but Reinhardt quickly regrouped for three-consecutive scores to finish set one by two points on a kill by Cheetara Bing (who had a team-best eight scores with Isabelle Diaz).
From then on, the Eagles were able to find their footing and fly through the next two games with relative ease. The team took control early and often in both sets in order to get playing time for a number of reserves.
Tessa Colden – who had seven kills – led the way in aces with four, while Carlee Baxter was tops in assists with 23 to go along with 11 digs.
Kelley Adkins again led the way in defensive receptions with 12.
