KINGSPORT, Tenn. – For the second-straight year under head coach Brian Goodhind, Reinhardt will compete for the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Championship crown after taking down St. Andrews (N.C.) in the semifinals in straight sets – 25-17, 25-15, 25-17.
High-powered offense was on display for the Eagles as they recorded 44 kills and hit a combined .360 in the three-set contest to up their school-record mark to 32-6 after claiming their sixth-consecutive victory.
"Great win for the program today against a very good St. Andrews team," Goodhind said. "We knew we had to pick up our game in order to compete with SAU today after their big win versus Union last night. Today, we looked like the complete opposite of yesterday; playing with very high energy. Today was a complete team win; from our bench to the girls on the floor, everyone contributed in some way. The match also was one where we were completely balanced offensively in all areas – middles, outsides and right sides hit very well… Izzy Diaz had her best collegiate match hitting .667 (8 kills, 0 errors on 12 attempts).
"I thought Carlee moved the ball around really well (36 assists, averaging 12 per set). I'm very proud of how the girls played today."
The Knights scored the opening point of the contest, but would have very few chances to stay ahead of their opposition on this afternoon, as Reinhardt put together multiple big scoring stretches throughout each set. The opening stanza was close up until the middle of the game where the Eagles jumped ahead, 15-9, after scoring four points in-a-row. Reinhardt would then string together seven points consecutively to take firm control of the set, 23-13, before Carlee Baxter won it will a kill.
St. Andrews would again make things interesting in the next stanza but watched as the Eagles went from up three points (16-13) to 22-13 in the blink of an eye. The Knights would muster up two more scores, but Goodhind's bunch would finish off the 2-0 lead with three-of-four points going its way.
Both teams went back-and-forth once again in the final game after St. Andrews held an early 7-4 advantage as the team tried its best to stay alive. Reinhardt would tally five-straight and six out of seven to move ahead, 10-8.
Each time the Knights would try and put something substantial together, the Eagles had an answer. St. Andrews even pulled within three at 18-15, but top team in the AAC went on multiple three-score runs before Emily Charbonneau set her club to the conference final.
