Eagles Take Game One of Weekend Series with Johnson
David Finney
Waleska, GA - The Eagles moved their series back a day for each of the three games because of weather issues on Thursday and Friday this past week. Reinhardt is hosting conference opponent Johnson University from Tennessee for the Weekend. Game one was on Saturday which was a perfect day for baseball. The sun was out, but there was still a slight coolness in the air with no humidity. The Eagles were coming off a midweek doubleheader where they put up huge runs amounts so the question would be could it continue into this series with Johnson.
Pablo Barquero would get the start for the Eagles in game one and he would get in seven innings of work. He would strikeout 4 Royal batters and keep them to 7 total hits. Parker Miller would come in to pitch the eighth and ninth innings getting one strikeout and giving up zero hits and runs. The Eagles would give up one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, but other than that - they pitched a shutout ballgame. Barquero would get the win in this game bringing his season total to 7 wins and 0 losses. Miller would get the save in game one.
The Eagles would get their runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Dalton Turnbow would get a solo shot over the right-field fence which was his first of the year. In the sixth inning, Patrick Baggett would single and then steal second base. After Alex Coulter was hit by a pitch, Shayne Campbell would come to the plate to get a single to left field. Baggett would easily score with his speed coming from second base. This would tie the game at 2-2.
In the seventh inning, things would loosen up some as Jacob Profit would lead off with a single to center field. Tucker Zdunich was walked next and then Dawson Johns and Patrick Baggett both would single to left field. This loaded the bases for the Eagles. Johnson would run into some pitching issues at this point and the next runs scored would come from a walk to Nick Sanders and Shayne Campbell was hit by a pitch. Zdunich and Johns would score on these plays. Later in the inning, Alvaro Valdez was walked which scored Baggett and the total would be 5-2 for the Eagles.
In the top of the eighth, Parker Miller would come in and shut down the Royals. He repeated this in the top of the ninth and the Eagles would get the 5-2 conference win over Johnson. The two teams will be back in action on Sunday afternoon for a 1 pm doubleheader start. The second game will begin around 4 pm.
