Winston-Salem, NC - In their second meeting in three weeks, the Eagles Volleyball team faced Carolina University and picked up another win. Not only did they pick another win, but they added more experience to what is a developing and growing volleyball team. They were able to take care of business and come away with three straight sets - 25-21, 25-12, and 25-21.
The first set was close from start to finish. The Eagles did get up four early in the set, but the Bruins fought their way back to tie it at 10 all. Reinhardt never relinquished the lead, however, it was within one point most of the way until Troy Sly and Matthew Corrales got a kill each after a service error by Carolina. The Eagles were able to get up by four and then they never let that lead slip. Corrales would get two kills to end the set, 25-21.
The second set would see Reinhardt show their dominance over the Bruins as they took an early lead which they could sustain the entire set. Dalton Fellows and Rayner Sarmiento would have a good set leading the way for the Eagles. The second set lead would get as high as eight points and the set would end on a kill by Ian Robinson and a block by Corrales.
The third set would be another tight one as it was tied but would pull away by four when Sarmiento would have a good stretch. In the stretch to get the Eagles up by four, Sarmiento had a kill, two blocks, and a service ace. It was a tremendous little run by Sarmiento and the Eagles. Reinhardt would never let the lead go after this run and Sarmiento would have a few more kills and blocks along the way. John Hynes, Sly, and Corrales would all play key roles in the final points to secure the set and match for the Eagles. The final would be 25-21 in favor of the Eagles and this would give them the match victory as well.
Coach Goodhind had this to say about the team and where they are headed as a program, "Good team win tonight. Proud of the guys energy and they continue to play within the culture we are building without focus on winning or losing. As happy as I am to go 1-0 after todays match, all the Glory Goes to God!"
Reinhardt will be back in action on Monday evening when they invite Morehouse College to The Brown Athletic Center. Look for the Eagles to keep gaining momentum and experience as this season continues.
